About us

An extraordinary history that goes back to 1946. The Cosmopolitan Club has come a long way. With the age old trees in Wayanad, so has The Cosmopolitan Club grown, and its roots merge deep into the culture and tradition of the region. Consumed by the soul of Wayanad, the region’s most prominent club has now transformed itself into a spectacular eco-resort with ample space for entertainment enabling visitors from all around the globe to truly experience Wayanad..

The Cosmopolitan Club was born as the “The Tagore Memorial Reading Room and Sports Club” in 1946 with Shri.Kottaram Gopala Iyer as its founder President and 35 members, with the desire for entertainment in Kalpetta. It was he who donated one acre of his land in the heart of Kalpetta. By 60’s, the club gradually gained its prominence bagging various laurels in Ball Badminton Tournaments under the captaincy of Late Shri. TVS Mani, the long term Club President, and soon took the leap to hosting state tournaments. In 1979, the Jinachandra Auditorium- the indoor shuttle court was inaugurated by the then Kerala Governor Smt.Jyothi Venkat Chellam. It will be a grave mistake if the names of the Kalpetta Panchayath, the Kalpetta Service Co-Operative Bank, Late Shri.MJ.Krisha Mohan, Shri MJ Vijayapadman, Late Shri. MP Veerendra Kumar, Shri Sharafudheen Kutty, Late Shri TS Ramakrishnan, Late Shri MP Samraj, Late Shri TP Punnoose, are not mentioned who were the main contributors behind the successful completion of the indoor court.

In the year 1981, when the government college was attollted to Kalpetta, it started functioning in the club auditorium (free of rent) and continued for two years till the construction of the college building was completed. The Club members undertook hospital visits and cleaned the premises and also consoled the suffering ones and poured in them confidence. It was this Club which provided a television set to Vythiri Sub Jail in the eighties. The Club members have made generous contributions for Lathoor Earthquake tragedy, Prime Minister’s Andhra Pradesh Relief fund, Kargil War Fund, Prime Minister’s Tsunami Relief Fund etc.

We cannot forget Mr.Kottaram Ratnam, brother of our Founder President Late Shri.Kottaram Gopala Iyer, who was always with us in the club in case of any emergency and has been a source of inspiration at times of difficulties. The history of the Club will be incomplete if the Kottaram family is omitted to be mentioned. In 1996, the Golden Jubilee of the Club was celebrated in the most befitting manner. The Club members regularly participates in the District Championships of various game events and gets selected for the State Championships.

The Club began with a purpose, and continues to live up to the exact purpose – Cosmopolitanism – thoughts free from regional spirits, accepting all kinds of people from all walks of life without consideration of caste, creed, religion or race – the club and the members have been trying their best for achieving this goal.
